Keep Calm . . . and Rock Your Midterms

Good morning, Lions!

A short post for you today, as we all know what time of the year it is: midterms. Yes, it’s stressful, but . . . you can do it! The most important thing is to keep calm and remember a few essentials to help you ace those tests and papers. So, without further ado, here’s a quick tip sheet.

The Days (and  Nights) Before:

  1. Take care of yourself. That means not skipping meals, getting some exercise where possible (even a brisk walk in the cold winter air will help clear your head) and, above all, making sure you get your zzzzzzs.
  2. Keep organized. Know what exam takes place when and where, and pack a bag with everything you need (calculators, functioning pens, paper, maybe some extra batteries and even your lucky charm) well ahead of time, so that you don’t need to think about these things the day of, when you’re already nervous.
  3. Try not to cram. Yeah, yeah, I know many of us have the tendency, but try to space out your studying. Believe it or not, your brain actually holds on to information better when you feed it little chunks at a time.

The Day Of:

  1. Take a moment for yourself before the exam. That means making sure you have breakfast and not racing to the exam at the last minute. Your confidence and focus will increase if you arrive with a few minutes to spare and a sense of calm. You’re in control of this thing, remember!
  2. Do final a review. No, this is not the same as trying to cram new information into your head half an hour before the exam. But taking one last look at everything can give you a sense of overview. Think of it as surveying the territory one final time to orient yourself.
  3. Slow down. Once in the exam, this idea of getting an overview of what lies ahead continues to be important. Rather than frantically starting to write, take a moment to plan a bit: read the exam questions carefully and assess where you think you will need more or less time. Be honest with yourself; if you’re a slow writer, know the essay sections will take you longer. And don’t panic if you see a question to which you don’t immediately know the answer. Build your confidence and your focus by doing the things you’re good at first . . . and the answer to the more difficult questions might become more readily available to you.
