With 300+ official clubs and student organizations at York University, it can be difficult to choose your extracurriculars for the year ahead. Not only is joining a student organization like the Rotaract Club of York University a great way to enrich your university experience and meet new friends, but it can help shape your early career path. When you are deciding what club to join, ask yourself: is this club the right fit for me? Will joining this club give me an opportunity to learn a new skill or develop my expertise? Will there be opportunities for leadership roles in the future?

To answer these questions and help you find the club that’s right for you, the YU Blog is reviving a series called Club Spotlight. If you want to learn more about the benefits of volunteering with a York U club, read our previous post Student Leadership 101: Advocating for Human Rights. Today, we are focusing the Club Spotlight on The Rotaract Club of York University with an exclusive interview from the 2016 President and current Executive Leadership member Preethu Kadduppil.

What is Rotaract?

Rotaract, which stands for Rotary in Action, is one of more than 35,000 clubs in the Rotary International organization. The Rotaract Club of York University educates and engages youth through community outreach initiatives, responsible citizenship and volunteerism. The club represents the three pillars of community, charity and career and inspires youth to be future leaders.

To give students a better idea of what they can expect from joining Rotaract, the YU Blog interviewed Preethu Kadduppil, the 2016 club President and current Executive Leadership member.

Why did you join Rotaract?

I joined Rotaract in my first year at York University because my roommate asked me to attend a volunteering event the club was hosting. I have always enjoyed volunteering, but the people I met that day and the conversations I had got me to commit to Rotaract. Over the past three years, I have had the pleasure of working with many inspiring people!

What can new members expect from joining Rotaract?

Rotaract is strongly focused on mentorship. As university students, we are in a unique position where we have knowledge to share but require guidance, especially in terms of career decisions. The executive team works very hard to connect our members with community leaders. We also provide the opportunity to become mentors for at-risk youth. If you are looking to engage with the local community and really make a difference, join Rotaract!

What could I do by joining Rotaract?

The Rotaract Club of York University organizes a variety of volunteering, social and skills development events on and off campus. By joining the Rotaract Club at York University, you can take part in activities such as case competitions, professional development workshops, district conferences, and club social events. For example, Rotaract has volunteered with the Rotary Club of Etobicoke, Kids Against Hunger, and Run4Kids, among others. Additionally, students can participate in events like the Rotaract Case Competition, where students use their critical thinking skills and creativity to present solutions for different social issues before a panel of judges. Rotaract also connects club members with industry leaders in the community to expand students’ professional networks. Last but not least, Rotaract is also dedicated to building lasting friendships and hosts club socials each year. Past events have included a trip to Niagara Falls, skating at Nathan Phillips Square and a game of Escape-It.

Just a few things about me: I'm a city girl who enjoys Netflix TV shows (a little too much), travelling to new places, listening to hip hop, eating brunch, being a fashionista and petting dogs. Overall, I hope my articles inspire you and educate you!
