Ask any graduate about their favourite memories from university and most will tell you about their experiences playing for an intramural team, going to campus events with their friends or tutoring their peers to help them achieve their academic goals. Getting involved on campus has many benefits: you can discover new passions, build your resumé and develop your existing strengths. Most importantly, getting involved on campus can help you build a community of students who inspire and support one another. In addition to the YU Blog’s “Tips for Transitioning to University“, here’s a list of ways to get involved on campus!

Join a campus club and volunteer

One of the best ways to make new friends and find your passion is to join a campus club. York U has 300+ official clubs, which you can find on the YU Connect website. Use this resource to browse York U student organizations, find upcoming volunteer events and connect with club leadership. You can also track your involvement through YU Connect and have it included on your Co-Curricular Record.

Want to meet representatives from York’s student clubs in person? Visit the Festival Village hosted by the York Federation of Students on Wednesday, September 27 from 10am to 5pm along the Campus Walk. This can’t-miss event during YorkFest is a great opportunity to discover all of York’s student clubs and see which you want to join. Whether you’re passionate about politics, hiking, app development or anything else you can think of, there is an on-campus club for you!

If you want to start your own club, check the York Federation of Students website to learn more about applying, available resources and funding.

Get acquainted with your college and the resources they offer

All York U students are assigned to a college that corresponds with either your faculty or residence. Each college offers unique resources to students, such as academic skills workshops, professional development sessions and social events. Check your college homepage for updates, including information about workshops, events, volunteer opportunities, peer mentorship programs and club announcements.

If you want to improve your study skills, join one of the workshops offered by Learning Skills Services or sign up for a Peer Academic Coaching session to meet with a fellow student. Not only will attending these extra learning sessions improve your classroom skills, but it’s an opportunity to meet new people and develop your resumé. If you attend eight or more Learning Skills Services workshops, you can get your Passport to Success certification.

Are you interested in student politics? Get involved with student government at your college! You can find more information about joining college-specific student government groups on your college homepage. You can also check with your Faculty for other student governance opportunities.
